ABSTRACT

In this thesis, I investigate the usage of adaptive replication algorithms for both static and dynamic Web sites. For static Web sites, I show the need for dynamic selection of replication strategies and present heuristics to perform this selection without much overhead. For dynamic Web pages, we propose a system that performs automatic replication of application data where the underlying data are replicated at servers that only access them. We show that automatic replication yields a significant reduction in update traffic and client latencies compared to existing techniques, with little expertise required from the system administrator or the application developer.
