ABSTRACT

The emergence of small, resource-constrained, and highly mobile computing platforms presents numerous challenges for software developers. We propose an adaptive middleware architecture for mobile phones that supports the development of interactive applications. It fulfills requirements such as context awareness, adaptability, and service discovery. Based on this architecture, we have implemented a prototype in J2ME, a widely used open platform in mobile phones. Applications are deployed on user's mobile phone and community services on the network servers. Services are implemented in Java. The prototype implementation is demonstrated by executing a wide set of use cases related to ubiquitous applications and environments, and results discussed.
