Visuo-haptic collaborative augmented reality ping-pong

Published: 13 June 2007 Publication History

Abstract

In our current work we examine the development of visuohaptic augmented reality setups and their extension to collaborative experiences in entertainment settings. To this end, an expandable system architecture supporting multiple users is one of the most indispensable prerequisites. In addition, system stability, low latency, accurate calibration and stable overlay of the virtual objects have to be assured. In this paper we provide an overview of our framework and present our collaborative example application, an augmented reality visuo-haptic ping-pong game for two players. The users play with a virtual ball in a real environmentwhile, by using virtual bats colocated with haptic devices, they are able to feel the impact of the simulated ball on the bat.
