Simulation in business and industry: how simulation context can affect simulation practice?

Abstract

We report the results of a study aiming to investigate the context and practices of simulation modellers in business and industry. Twenty expert modellers interviewed in this study describe their simulation contexts and practices. The results suggest that simulation modellers develop their models under varying contexts and their context has the effect on their practices. The problem domain, the scope of the problem, simulation language/technique/package used, the size and complexity of the problem simulated are a few of the contextual factors which may affect a modeller's approach to simulation model development. We report how these contextual factors affect the way simulation modellers, develop, document, maintain and evaluate their models.
