Web 3.0: a vision for bridging the gap between real and virtual

Published:31 October 2008Publication History

ABSTRACT

Version numbering of the Web has become a common practice in recent years. The latest version is the Web 3.0. However, this term is still somehow ambiguous and IT experts do not seem to agree on a specific definition. We present a review of such different trends for the next generation of the Web, while providing our own view for a next generation Web version that makes a convergence between the real world and the virtual means of communication and information access, enabling an ambient intelligence scenario of pervasive and ubiquitous computing.

          Antonio Cimmino

This paper is an interesting overview of the evolution path of the Web toward "release" 3.0, including the technologies and solutions that have characterized (Web 1.0, Internet surfing and Web 2.0, and users who contribute to the contents of the Internet), and will characterize, the Web era. Going beyond the analysis of new, impressive solutions in the third phase of the Web, the authors try to provide a vision of a possible role that the Internet will play in daily social life. In some ways-the transparent effect on the environment, the reality mixed with the virtuality of the Web, user centricity, and so on-this work meets the objective of providing new viewpoints for a correct identification of what the next generation of the Web will become. The briefing in the "Technology Challenges" section provides some hints about the role that Web 3.0 will play in driving software innovations, and prepares the technical field for other similar papers and e-books. The paper is aimed at readers who are approaching Web technologies either as developers or executives. Online Computing Reviews Service
