An analytical approach to model adaptive video streaming and delivery

Published: 29 October 2010 Publication History

Abstract

An efficient and practical technique for robust and scalable distribution of multimedia content is the key to satisfy a large group of peers' needs endowed with limited network resources. Given a video source, a group of intended destination peers and heterogeneous network resources, the challenge is to distribute the content among these peers to ensure the best quality of experience using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) paradigm. In the literature, there exists some promising solutions to address this issue; however, without an optimal solution it is hard to judge the efficiency of the existing protocols. In this paper, we present a mathematical model to represent an adaptive video streaming architecture for peer-to-peer networks and social networking. The model encompasses multiple-parent resource contribution in terms of bandwidth and CPU power. We also present a performance analysis which illustrates the trade-offs in service fairness and system efficiency.
