Implementation of a knowledge portal as an e-learning tool to support MSc projects

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to introduce the implementation of a Knowledge Portal as an e-learning tool to support collaboration among MSc students during the development of their project dissertations on topics within the Knowledge Management field.

The Knowledge Portal is intended to take advantage of Web 2.0 technologies to increase the level of engagement of users in learning activities, promoting active participation within a virtual community and sharing a common interest in the Knowledge Management discipline. The Knowledge Portal could also promote problem-based learning as students create content and drive utilisation of the portal itself to support their projects.

The Knowledge Portal can support the different stages of MSc projects, allowing monitoring of project tasks and achievement of milestones.

This initiative has been started at the beginning of this year (research on progress) as a web-based extension of traditional personal supervision meetings.

The generated content and members interactions can be used to measure the level of engagement with the Knowledge Portal and also to understand barriers to implementation.

The Knowledge Portal is built on CodeBeamer collaborative open source platform as an example of affordable and practical Knowledge Management instrument.
