      John J. Hirschfelder

In this introduction to color perception and the effects of combining colors, the authors discuss hue and light value and effects at color boundaries, including vibration, blurring, and the effect of adjacent colors on color perception. Each of the effects discussed is illustrated with abstract designs. The authors draw heavily on the work of the abstract painter Josef Albers, specifically his book [1]. The article includes color patches on a perforated sheet, with which the reader can experiment. Three studies of vibration, blurring, and color-changing-color effects are described . Despite the title and two examples, the application of these concepts to interface design as such is not addressed to any significant degree. There are other dangling references, including a “color wheel” and “the examples of Albers' work,” that tend to confuse the uninitiated reader.
