Meditative process in new media art: an affective possibility of digital media in the art making process

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the author suggests affective possibilities in technology that can be found in a digital art making process. As going through a persistent, intimate process of digital production with contemplation, media artists gain a unique experience and build an affective relationship with digital technology. Through the process, artists realize the gap between their mind image and digital representation and discover the affective potentials that connect digital media and bodies. The author explores the ambiguous nature of affect and addresses an alternative relationship between human bodies and digital technology. The author, as a media artist, experiences the awakening through her making process and realizes that its analogy to Zen practice in arts that requires a meditative discipline and inner interaction with the tool and media itself. Media artists overcome the limit of the absolute rationality and discontinuity of digital media through a meditative computational mode of operation.
