Goals and design considerations for a mathematical laboratory

Abstract

It seems obvious that the education of future scientists and engineers should include a facile familiarity with one of their present and future main tools, mathematical software. Less obvious is the methodology and the facilities which an institution of higher learning should provide for this educational goal. Since our 1985 report [1] on the ETH solution there developed a number of more or less closely collaborative efforts at other institutions. There were also some changes, additions and experiences, which we propose to briefly review and comment on.
