ABSTRACT
The Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) can provide unique information on how driver behavior leads to crashes or near-crashes. A subset of this dataset was created to examine naturalistic engagement in secondary tasks (NEST; Owens, Angell, Hankey, Foley, & Ebe, 2015). The NEST dataset is composed of crash and near-crash epochs which have identified secondary tasks as a contributing factor and contains 20 seconds of coding before a crash or near-crash. The present analysis aims to identify high level prevalence characteristics of the dataset. This analysis focuses on the prevalence of secondary task engagement alone, during adverse weather, and during different traffic densities. Additionally, task occurrence with other tasks (i.e., comorbidity) is considered. Overall, the results indicate that some factors (e.g., weather, traffic density) can influence a driver's decision to engage in certain secondary tasks.
