Abstract

Welcome to HealthMedia, the 3rd International Workshop for Multimedia for Personal Health and Health Care, held on Oct 22, 2018, in conjunction with ACM Multimedia 2018 in Seoul, Republic of Korea

Managing one's health is among the most personal and important challenges for everyone. There is an increasing amount of work that shows how core multimedia research is becoming an important enabler for solutions with applications and relevance for the societal questions of health. The HealthMedia workshop contributes to shaping the discussion of health in multimedia. We explore the relevance, contribution and future directions of multimedia to health care and personal health. With this, we continue the discussion from two previous successful workshops held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2016, and Mountain View, USA 2017.

The keynote by Seongho Cho, Samsung, provides insights into the latest development of personal health management from an industry leader's point of view. In the scientific program, the nine accepted papers from international research groups cover three main areas of multimedia research, namely biosignal processing, understanding the user, and interaction and intervention design. The broad range of potential applications from sleep apnea and cardiovascular rehabilitation, up to stair climbing and food journaling, is an indicator of the high relevance of the research. It also shows how societal challenges drive technological research.
