ABSTRACT

The advantages and disadvantages of professional development opportunities, such as sabbaticals and leaves of absence for university computer center personnel, have been evaluated by others. This paper reports on experiences at the Stanford Center for Information Processing (SCIP) where professionals have been hired for one year as visiting staff members in User Services while on leave from permanent positions at other university computer centers.
