Toward distributed applications management using the OSI management framework

Published: 31 October 1994 Publication History

Abstract

As more and more mission-critical applications and services are deployed in distributed computing environments, managing these applications and services for increased reliability and performance is becoming an increasingly important and necessary task. Managing distributed applications involves monitoring, analyzing, and controlling their behavior as necessary. The OSI Management Framework has been originally proposed for managing networks and their devices. In this paper, we report on our work investigating the use of the OSI Management Framework for managing distributed applications. We report on a prototype distributed application manager and prototype distributed application which utilize the OSI framework. Our experience thus far indicates that the OSI Management Framework provides rich and powerful mechanisms and facilities for managing distributed applications.
