ABSTRACT
This paper describes and analyzes the current state of IBM timesharing. The functionality of the timesharing system is described through the evolution of the remote job processing facility. The constraints to the replacement of batch by timesharing are discussed, acknowledging that these constraints are offset by the potential of timesharing to provide an enhanced computing environment via its man-machine interface. Finally the actual implementations of common computing tasks are compared against the full potential inherent to timesharing.
