An improved QTCQ wavelet image coding method using DCT and coefficient reorganization

Published: 06 November 2005 Publication History

Abstract

An improved quadtree classification and TCQ (QTCQ) wavelet image compression method is proposed in this paper. The method applies small block DCT to coefficients in the high frequency subbands and reorders them before quantizing and coding. Experiments results show that the proposed method outperforms QTCQ and other state-of-the-art wavelet coding methods. For example, for Barbara image, at 0.5 bit/pixel, this algorithm outperforms QTCQ, SPIHT, SLCCA and JPEG2000 by 0.4dB, 1.04dB, 0.54dB and 0.17dB in PSNR, respectively. It is also observed that this algorithm works extremely well for textured images like fingerprint images.
