Adapting the IS success model for mobile technology in health: a New Zealand example

Published: 19 August 2008 Publication History

Abstract

Many healthcare providers throughout the world are starting to take advantage of mobile technologies as part of their key initiatives to provide better quality service. Given that the benefits of Information Technology (IT) in the health sector is still in the early stages of discovery, there should be good opportunities for mobile technologies in this area. The purpose of this paper is to identify what adaptations, if any, would be necessary to ensure acceptance of mobile technology applications the health sector. Based on an in-depth, longitudinal, single-case study of the implementation of a wireless bed management system in a regional hospital, an analysis of the factors that contributed to the success of the system was used to identify significant enhancements to the IS Success Model as originally set out by DeLone and McLean. The study found that factors, such as Hardwar/Device Selection, Network Coverage, Immediacy of decision making information and an IS Governance Structure that recognizes the specifics of mobile technology management are essential enhancements to the IS Success Model for predicting the fate of mobile applications.
