ABSTRACT
The Shannon capacity predicts the theoretical maximum rate of information transfer through a channel, at a given noise level. However, this concept has limited application in LTE networks. As such, alpha-Shannon capacity, which is modified from Shannon capacity, has been proposed for use in LTE networks. Nonetheless, the existing alpha-Shannon capacity formula is still unable to predict accurately the standard peak data rate capacities for LTE. This study proposes a modified alpha-Shannon capacity formula to better predict the value of the LTE peak data rate. In the proposed modification, the system level bandwidth efficiency α value and required maximum target SNR efficiency ω value for each modulation type are taken into consideration for calculating the expected peak data rate. The proposed formula is compared against the alpha-Shannon capacity formula. Results show that the proposed formula is more accurate for the standard LTE than the alpha-Shannon capacity. Consequently, the proposed formula can improve the estimation accuracy of link adaptation techniques to achieve better network performance.
